Bomb's Away Cafe, in Corvallis, is well known for it night-time music venue. They have bands from all over the state trying to book a spot. I had a chance to head down there to hear, Santino Cadiz's band play.

Around 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 7th, Santino opened the busy crowd to some reggae that soothed the atmosphere, putting the crowd in a relaxed state. You can see many patrons, sitting with their friends enjoy the ambiance.

Matt Shirley, Santino Cadiz, Aaron Linn, and Tim Anderson.
The four piece band played with precision, entertain the crowd for about an hour. Santino Cadiz's Band is  based out of Portland, on the Anthropos Records label. If you go on Santino's blog, "Love Life Music", he explains his thoughts on why his music is important to him. "We came down here tonight, Corvallis, to share a little love with ya all," says Santino.

Santino laid the lyrics down smooth, backed by the rhythm guitar, while Matt Shirley pulled the reggae solos out with fluid motion.

If you ever get a chance, check out Santino Cadiz's music and theories about it. To him, music is life and its expression. So if you are into some reggae, good vibes, and smooth sounds; Cadiz is your band.

I was able to catch up with some guys, playing a little basketball after work. They usually play at the boys and girls club every Monday and Friday and I caught up with them to see what it was like. It was a nice time to go and see average joe's taking time out of their daily grind, in order to have a little fun and competition with their friends.

Paver, 44, is originally from Illinois. He has been working in education for 20 years, and has spent 14 years in higher education. Paver has worked with the administration and faculty for eight years at Triton College in River Grove, Ill.
“I’ve mostly worked with helping faculty integrate technology into their curriculum. I’ve improved things such as online classes, hybrid classes, and faculty to help students, and find new ways to improve the learning environment,” says Paver.
Paver went to Western Illinois University, earning a bachelor of arts in mass communications, radio/television broadcasting. He received his master of arts in religion and history from Trinity International University and his Ph.D from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas. He has been working on a doctoral program at Northern Illinois University, studying instructional technology.
He has been employed at Triton College for most of his career, as dean of Arts and Sciences. For the past three years, he has been working as the director of Triton’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and a program to help create better student environments called “Achieving the Dream.” Paver hopes to further degree partnership programs and learn the process of how the state of Oregon handles curriculum.
“When I get to LBCC, I want to lend a hand with building a relationship with ‘Achieving the Dream.’ I know a great deal about them and how to achieve successful learning environments for students,” says Paver.
Paver applied for the dean of Instruction job on www.higheredjobs.com. He was asked for an interview essay, and after a little back and forth, Paver was flown out for a short interview. This led to another flight for an all-day interview, and ultimately to being hired for the job.
“I’ve seen the progress that LBCC has made in the past couple years and it excites me to be a part of exploring options to advance the college and keeping the momentum going,” says Paver.
Paver enjoys historical and science fiction writing. His hobbies also consist of nature photography, cooking and eating. He has lived in Montana, Wisconsin and Nevada. He and his wife, Jennifer, enjoy lots of hiking. Paver will be moving to Corvallis on June 22.

Winder, 33, is originally from Portland. She earned her undergraduate degrees in economics and German at Lewis & Clark College. She attended Johns Hopkins University to receive her Ph.D in economics. She was also a founding faculty member for the University of California – Merced, working in a lead role of her economics division. She spent six years at UC-Merced from 2005-11.
“We all had lead roles as being professors. We had more clubs than we had actual students at first. Everyone was trying to come there so they could make their mark and tradition,” says Winder. “As much as I enjoyed being a teacher, I really found joy in starting up programs or being a research economist.”
After leaving UC-Merced, Winder decided to come back to Oregon. She was hired at LBCC for the associate dean of Liberal Arts, working directly with Hogeland.
“I adored working with her. She made my life so much easier. She’s so smart and competent. I gave her projects I never had a chance to get to and they were done well,” says Hogeland.
“Luckily, Beth was a wonderful mentor and made the transition very fluid,” says Winder.
Winder has a genuine affinity for people; she looks for the good in others. Part of her job was to assess students for school and what courses they need to take. According to Hogeland, this isn’t an easy task, but Winder excelled.
She was asked by the English, Math and Developmental Studies programs to do some advising for them as well.
She has many plans in her new role as dean of Liberal Arts. One of her most important goals is to bring clarity to the classroom, along with her initiative to help new students entering college for the first time.
“The reason I’m glad to have this job is because I have the freedom to try new things. For example, when new students come to register, it can be a terrible experience for both the student and faculty,” says Winder. “With older students, who have been here longer, they have first choice for classes, making it more difficult for new students to register for the classes they need. We can make an easier path for new students by trying to have classes that are catered to them.”
“Part of my job is to assess how teachers are doing in their classrooms and help facilitate a better learning environment. I love observing in the classroom and working in the arts division. We are also trying to help incoming students by offering certain prerequisite classes only at the registration booth.”
Other than being a school administrator, Winder and her husband, Michael, have two children: Daphne, 2, and Miranda, 6. Winder is part of a softball team and enjoys sewing.

New Deans at LBCC

The winds are changing at LBCC as two young administrators take over as the deans of Liberal Arts and Instruction.

New Dean Katie Winder. by Kody Kinsella
Katie Winder has begun her new position as dean of Liberal Arts, while Jonathan Paver is finishing up his time at Triton College before starting Monday, July 2. Since they excelled in their respective interviews, LBCC decided to offer both Winder and Paver positions for the good of the college.
There were four candidates for the dean of Liberal Arts position during the month of April. They interviewed over a period of three days. Teresa Thomas, administrative assistant for the dean of Liberal Arts, was part of the hiring committee that interviewed Winder.
“Some people will give you long, lengthy presentations, where Katie was enthusiastic, works well with people, and brings a new breath of excitement,” says Thomas.
After becoming a finalist to become the dean of Liberal Arts, Winder was a contender for the dean of instruction position as well.
In all, the college had seven candidates for the dean of instruction.
Beth Hogeland, executive vice president of Academic Affairs and former dean of Liberal Arts, describes the choices as difficult. Both Paver and Winder were well qualified for the dean of instruction job.
“Both candidates (Paver and Winder) are really young for college administrators. It makes me think of how the world is changing; they are both very tech savvy, knowledgeable about distance education and are researchers with curious minds,” says Hogeland. “We hired both of them within three weeks of each other. They both have a strong interest in students. Even though they didn’t have the years of experience, they were able to captivate us by that interest.”
The position of dean of instruction was offered to Paver. Overall, the choices appear to be a win for everyone.
Both new administrators want to focus on helping students, and will have the opportunity in the time to come.
